How many hip surgeries have you had?: 6 hip surgeries, 3 of which were replacements
What is the cause of your hip problems?: born with congenital dislocated hips and osteoarthritis
What is/was your profession?: Retired Dental Assistant
Comments:
I was born with congenital hip dysplasia in both hips in l950. My problem was not diagnosed until I was 5 years old, at that time I was hospitalized to try and correct the problem. The doctors unsuccessfully tried closed reduction surgery which didn't work and then were successful with open reduction surgery on both hips. I was hospitalized at the time for 2 years to correct this problem. I was also put in body casts from the waist down to the ankles to help stabilize the hips after surgery. After coming home from the hospital, I had intensive therapy and was able to return to school. I had a noticeable limp of which was detected by other students and I was teased throughout my school years. Over the period of years, I developed a severe case of osteoarthritis. I had bilateral hip replacements done in l982, the replacements were done within l0 days of each other. They started to fail within 2 years of the time they were done. After putting up with pain and agony for over l5 years, I decided to have the left hip revised. I had the left hip revised in Oct. l997. The other hip will need revision in the near future. My first replacements were cemented in place and the revision was non-cemented. Anyone thinking about having both hips done at the same time, please think about it carefully. I was not satisfied with having mine done so close together. My prognosis started to go down hill 2 years after they were put in. So, think about it carefully. I think Linda's website has been a God send for all of us. God Bless you Linda!! I only wish there had been something like this available my first time around l5 years ago.

What is the cause of your hip problems?: congenital bilateral hip dislocation
What is/was your profession?: former high school English teacher; currently, secretarial & bookkeeping for my husband's outdoor clothing and equipment shop
Comments:
I was diagnosed with congenital bilateral hip dislocation at age 3, but as I was walking and running with ease (and only a slight limp), the orthopaedic specialist my parents consulted recommended that we "wait and see." I enjoyed 40+ normally active yea s before I developed pain and increasing stiffness and disability in the right hip (paradoxically, the more "solid" of the two, which had formed a shallow false "socket" in the side of the pelvis). I have been through consultation under the National Heal h Service and have at last been referred to a specialist experienced in THRs in dysplasia cases, and am looking forward to surgery this summer. This web site has been an important source of information which enabled me to push for a THR when my original consultant could only be negative about the probability of a successful outcome in my case. I would be happy to contribute my experience to (and hear from) other CHD "babies."

Comments:
A wonderful source of information and way of sharing our common problem. I am an AVN, from steroids, victim. I have had surgery on right hip which was in the form of a core decompression w/local bone graft. If this first surgery is a success I will have the left hip operated on this next year. If not I will have a THR on right and see what happens next. Hopefully the core decompression will work as my AVN was diagnosed in the early stages.

How many hip surgeries have you had?: left THR, right THR scheduled January 19, 1998
What is the cause of your hip problems?: "Idiopathic" Avascular Osteonecrosis
What is/was your profession?: Corporate Training Consultant
Comments:
Before AVN, I was an extremely active person. My left THR was a great success, and I am one of the lucky people who have reacquired almost all of the mobility and flexibility of the original. I've also had a total shoulder replacement (called a "Neer Shoulder Protocol") and it also has been a tremendous success. After suffering almost total debilitation, I now have full range-of-motion in the shoulder and can lift almost as much as pre-surgery. Things I'm looking forward to being able to do again: weight-t raining, hiking, biking, country-western dancing, playing Frisbee with my partner, David, and returning to playing piano professionally. I am a proponent of the "New Thought" spiritual philosophy: "It takes great courage to announce oneself as a man of Go . You understand, the world will much more readily accept you as virtually anything else."

Comments:
The first hip surgery involved bone grafts and was done at Boston Children's Hospital. I remained in a body cast for most of the more than six year hospitalization. At the time, if one was crippled of body, one was considered to also be crippled of mind so no schooling was provided nor were there any toys etc. It was not until I left that I learned that children on the outside could walk! I had assumed that one had to wait until adulthood before walking....Life went on and eventually the pain increased and the mobility deteriorated. On January 20, 1997 I had my right hip replaced. Initially, the prognosis was not good but God gave me another miracle. This time my hospital stay was just eight days. Since recovery I have become totally pain free for t e first time in my life... My advice to others is, "Do not allow your doctor to make you wait for a THR because you are too young". In the last ten months I have played 162 golf games and walked 431 mall miles. If I had waited, as advised, I would have done nothing but sit in pain .

I'm currently looking for help for my Mother who is 74 yrs old and in severe hip pain constantly now. She has stood on her feet most of her life working, in assembly lines or operating and lifting heavy tool & die machine equipment. Also has hoed ( yes hoe ) many acres of crops. Her doctor seems to be stonewalling her. He admits that her x-rays show considerable damage, and that the cartilage is gone between the joints, but keeps putting her off.?? She believes it is because of her insurance being Secure Horizons. Can someone out there help us with this?

What is/was your profession?: Norwegian instructor turned medical records technician
Comments:
I was born with DDH (developmental dysplasia of the hips) formerly called cong hip dislocation. Treated with traction, body casts and braces as a young child. No problems until my late 20's when I developed OA and severe hip pain. Joints deteriorated quickly. Had THR #1 (on left) at age 33 (Aug.1985). Had a second pregnancy, then THR #2 on right side (Feb.90). Had hardware complication on right, loosening of prosthesis and some bone loss, so had right THR completely revised Dec.93. Had cup on 1st left THR revised Feb.97. Have been fairly pain free, except lower back. Don't haul gravel in wheelbarrows any more, nor do I recommend carrying a 2x4 on crutches! Am trying to keep up the physical therapy because working thru the right hip pain seems to help strengthen and tone the joint. But.... I am very grateful for all the wisdom and support found at this site. I've learned it's OK to feel depressed and have a pity party now and then. There are so many "wings and halos" here. It has taught me to reach out to others. Thank you, Linda.

I was just diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis in May 1997. Both of my hips are involved. I had my first left THR on December 11, 1997. My right hip is holding up so far. It's only stage 2 with no real symptoms yet.I am recovering very well. No problem to speak of. I'm the mother of two young children so I have to recover fast! I miss driving very much!!! Hope to be back behind the wheel ASAP. Special thanks to Linda for providing hippies with such a great source of support and information. By the way , had my surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in NYC. The place was wonderful and I really love my surgeon, that is very important when you are contemplating such an important surgery. I feel very lucky! Hope everyone has a pain free day! Patty in N.J.

When I was 10yrs old I fell and broke my left hip. I had pins, then screws. Over the years my hip just got weaker and weaker until I could hardly walk without major pain. I had my THR Sept. 17,97. Doctor said it will take about 1yr until I'm able to walk straight again. My left leg was short for 22yrs and now my legs are the same length but my back still thinks my leg is shorter.

When I was twenty nine years of age I became very ill, flu-like symptoms. After many tests and several different doctors, I was diagnosed with Rhem. Arthritis. At one point I couldn't walk. I was put on steroids. I became much better (or so I thought) Years later I couldn't walk without much pain and to find out I need both hips replaced. So, at the age of thirty-six I had my left hip replaced, and at the age of thirty-eight I had the right hip replaced. I will soon need the sockets redone. Needle s to say I'm not looking forward to this but hey, I can walk! I have a great doctor, His name is Michael Christie and he can be found at the Vanderbilt Arthritis & Joint Replacement center located in Nashville Tennessee.

I had Perthes as a kid. The damaged hip eventually developed osteoarthritis, which became so severe that I finally opted for a THR. That was in August, 1997. The biggest boon to my recovery has been swimming. I started out at 1/2 mile the first time ( three weeks after surgery) and I'm now up to a mile. I swim 4 to 6 days a week.
