My surgery on my left hip was done Oct.21,1997-After limping and having to finally resort to a cane I decided to find a surgeon and "go for it"! It was probably the best decision of my life! Within a month and a half I was without pain and almost dancing!!

Hi, I enjoy your page. I am scheduled for right hip replacement on April 28. That was the first available date my surgeon had available. He must be a busy man. I am scared to death! Currently, I am in so much pain that I cannot stand it. I rented a TENS unit and go to a phys therapist, but I still experience a great deal of burning, etc. I would appreciate if anyone wanted to drop me a line of encouragement. Thank you.

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with AVN in both hips due to corticosteroids in 11/96 after 2 years of increasing pain. I had THR on the left in 1/97 then had a large deep vein thrombosis in the femoral vein a month later (in spite of appropriate prophylaxis so went to the hospital for several days of bed rest and heparin. Since then the left hip has been great. I had the right THR done 12/97 and all is well so far, I go to the surgeon tomorrow. Both are ceramic and I hope they last a long time. I can't wait o go back to work and to the gym. In my experience the surgery is definitely worth it.

Just finishing up from the ICE STORM of 98. Missed my Dr. appointment rescheduled for 1/22/98. Time to do the Blood Bank again! I am sure that I will be playing golf this summer. If you need the surgery have it done it is better than waiting for things to get better. I have prolonged severe symptoms for over a year with Glucosomine and Chrondroitin and I will continue to take daily after the procedure. It really helps. Good Luck to all and keep the Faith.

Had hip replacement in 1985 due to avascular necrosis. Had prednisone as part of chemotherapy, and fell. Bone decompression at Johns Hopkins didn't work, but hip replacement (cement-less due to age -- 45) has been wonderful. Dr. Peter Keblish of Allentown PA used experimental hip, but now socket has to be replaced on 3/6/98. No symptoms but bone behind socket is thinning. Had hoped to make 15 years but I am very active and certainly tested this hip! Can't complain because for all of the 12 years I could d do anything -- still can. Hope to be back to work in 6 weeks.

In Nov. of '97 I was in an auto accident, dislocated and fractured my hip and lost allot of cartilage, I have two plates and screws in my left hip. I'm still recovering, have been laid up for 2 months can now start putting weight on my leg, will start going to therapy this week, doctor said I could get arthritis within 2 years and eventually will need a hip replacement. I am very happy with my doctor and how he helped me but I would like to prove him wrong, I have started on vitamins to help prevent arthritis s and to take care of the rest of my body, I'm 25 and just learning about all this, I never had any health problems until my accident, and my only problem is my left hip, would like to talk to someone with a similar experience, to everyone out there--keep p positive and believe in prayer!

It's a real hard decision to make I just pray I can make the right one. LOL Buster (curleyboy)

I am now 3 years post. Doing well, could use more muscle mass but am tired of the exercise routines. About 5 years ago I caught a cold, which led to serum sickness. I was treated with prednisone for about 2 months. A year later had AVN in wrists, elbows shoulders, ankles, knees and of course, hips. All the other joints healed up well over time except for the hips. My ortho tried core decompressions without luck, so now I set off the detectors at the airport.

When I found myself suddenly unable to dance in September of 1997, I was devastated. I have always thought of myself as a dancer-strong and flexible. Whatever else failed me in life, my body had never let me down. I no longer knew who I was, slow and l me...unable to do the things that made me feel alive. I really felt alone and didn't know how to deal with my fears. Then I found Linda's Totally Hip Group and thanks to all the kind and generous people I met, and especially to a few extra-special people I now count as friends, I wasn't alone anymore. Now I know we all have the same fears and worries about doctors and implants and depression, about the surgery and pain and how life will be afterwards. Miraculously, caring about other people has made me less afraid for myself. Thanks to Linda and her wonderful group, we are not alone...we have each other!

Had R replacement 6-92. Complained to Dr. that periodically it felt like the ball was rolling backwards out of the socket, then slamming back in Every checkup from 8-92 on to 2-96 kept complaining about 'partial dislocation' May 96 it went out and didn't go back in. Closed reduction got it back in. Jan. 97 same thing. March decided to have socket replaced with one that had a locking ring to pre vent dislocations. Within 10 days developed a 'thump' that was excruciating. No one could find the 'locking mechanism' on x-ray. Late Aug of 97 had total revision of socket-old socket removed, new one inserted at new angle. So far this has worked,

My hip surgery (one and only, I hope) was April 1996. I had messed around with varying degrees of pain for 12 years. Finally I said enough and the doctor at Northwestern, Chicago scheduled the date. All went well, home in 4 days, walking unassisted and driving in 3 weeks. One complication - a pinched nerve in my buttocks that wasn't acknowledged or diagnosis for 20 months. I am now in pain therapy. The PT does passive muscle massage and in 3 weeks there is lessening of the neuropathy in my foot. I am hopeful of progress w with the calf cramp and thigh pain. I also do a series of exercises twice daily. This treatment is an entirely different philosophy than the 6 weeks of therapy I had post-op. The first therapy strengthened my large muscle groups but nearly did in my knees.

It was a very difficult decision to make at the time, But I am really happy I went through with it. I am completely pain free! For anyone in the New York Metropolitan area contemplating a THR, I would recommend The Hospital for Special Surgery.

Had surgery 12/3/97 on left hip, remained in hospital (Alta Bates, Berkeley, CA) until 12/9/97. Have been doing my PT exercises daily and walking. Have progressed from 2 crutches to 1, and then to cane, and now walk around the house without cane. Will have y 6-week visit with Dr. on 1/15/98. I am pleased with my recoup, hope my Dr. will be also.
