I have had 5 THR since 1977 (age 40). The first one worked well, but wore out and was replaced in 1990. It's fine. The second one was replaced twice because the cement wouldn't hold. The implant loosened and it was replaced for a third time with the cementless type in 1986. It has also worked well, except it is beginning to show some wear. After all this, I would like to have another doctor look at them. Has anyone had any experience with the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Alexandria, VA? If so, I ould appreciate an e-mail message. Thanks.

Just an update; haven't been in touch with the group in some time. I'm 9 weeks post op from my 2nd THR and all is well. I'm looking forward to vacation in May (San Francisco), and I've even been dancing quite a lot. My partner, David, and I have even been out playing frisbee (but that's on hold now until the weather cooperates).

Came down with AVN(stage IV) of left hip from no apparent cause. Dr.s said I was too far gone to try a core decompression. They wanted me to hold off as long as possible before having a THR. I searched and scowered the earth and found a Dr. who does experimental surgery by grafting your fibula bone into your hip. He has done approx. 1000 with a 70% success rate. It has been 7 months and today I passed my FAA physical and am heading back to work. I would suggest any young person with AVN check out this option before proceeding with a THR. Good luck to you all.

I was lifting approx. 60lbs. and twisted to the left, immediately felt pain in my lower back and left hip and groin. Did all the x-rays/MRI/CAT and bone scan of hip and femur, showed I had buldged disks at L4/L5 and a small fracture of the acetabular, (which by the way healed fine) but I had serious pain in my hip,I was put on MedPac Predizone for 6 days, had seriod injections in hip and back, (which none did anything for the pain, but did make me sicker then a dog!) I faithfully went to Physical Therapy for 4 months. It is now 10 months later and I have still got pain in my hip and the little clicking noise has turned to a grinding popping noise when I walk putting just the slightest weight bearing on it. My Doc suggests arthroscopy of the hip joint, as a further diagnostic and possible mend to this problem. Any suggestions of experiences with this procedure, I can not take the pain and the fact that I am so limited in my activities. please drop me a line, I know that my problem is minor to some of what I have been reading but thanks for any info, and my Prayers are with each of you.

"Totally Hip" has been an invaluable source of information, not to mention comfort and piece of mind. I was only 31 when I was told I'd need a THR. I have been a classical ballet, jazz, tap and modern dancer all of my life. I love to scuba dive, hike, tc. How would all of this change my life? Well, I can now say for the better because before my surgery I couldn't even walk let alone do the aforementioned! My surgical team was so impressed when I brought in 4 typed pages of questions before the surgery; all of which I got from the support group. They answered every one! Living with rheumatoid arthiritis since I was 17 was easy for 12 years because I was in remission. Three years ago it flared with a vengence, hence the need for hips. The surgery was not as hard as I expected (done the day before my 32nd birthday) and I am so eager to help anyone who has questions and will be going through this. It helps tremendously to be educated about every detail. I am here if anyone needs me to help as I was helped so lovingly through my first surgery. My right hip will be done in June of this year and I feel it will be easier because I will be more prepared physically and mentally. God Bless Linda and all the Hippies! Lisa "Hippie Chick"

I had my dislocated left hip operated on when I was nineteenth months old. Now, forty-plus years later, the joint has disintegrated. Standing, walking, rolling over in bed are all painful. So, I saw an orthopedic surgeon yesterday, March 10, 1998, and e thinks THR is in the works. Since he is the back specialist in the practice, I am to see the hip specialist next Monday, March 16, 1998. I certainly didn't schedule surgery for 1998, but if it has to happen, so be it. I have read all the stories on t is web site, and I get the feeling that most people are glad to have had THR. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I began working at the Post Office in Minneapolis on February 1997. A month and a half later my right leg seemed stiff and I could hardly walk. I went to the ortho doctor and the requested an MRI done on both hips. The MRI results came back and they di not think I had AVN but didn't want to rule that out just yet, so they requested me to return in 6 to 8 months for a follow up MRI. In January of 1998, I returned for my follow up MRI and it was confirmed that I have Avascular Necrosis. My ortho doctor told me that I was too far along for the core decompression procedure and that since he only does hip replacements on older people, he suggested I go see another doctor. (Since I am so young and need several in my lifetime, my ortho doctor does not speci lize in doing more than one hip replacement in a person.) I was then referred down to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where I saw an excellent doctor. He would like me to wait for a total hip replacement until I can no longer take the pain. I am in qu te a bit of pain now, and my leg is already a centimeter shorther than the other, but I will just have to deal with it as I have been for a year now. Since I'm a letter carrier and I have to "walk" to keep my job, I now either have to find a different position in the post office or quit all togther. Talk about alot of stress.

I have AVN in my right hip as well, and I will eventually need a right THR but hopefully it will wait a little loner than my left hip. I am amazed at how many of you hippies are so young, and how upbeat many of you are. Great! I had right high done in 1990, and left nine months later. Those went well except for slight limp because of right high. Just found out right thigh bone has thinned so much that two hip surgeons I saw fear the bone will break. Original surgeon, Dr. Matza, Waterbury, CT says he will have to replace most of the prothesis and do a bone graft. Surgery scheduled for March 31. Left thigh bone seems to be okay. Don't look forward to another operation, but Doc assures me he has done this procedure many times. Anyone know if recovery is longer when bone graft is done and/or of any complications that might arise?. Thanks and keep smiling.

I had a total hip replacement on 2/5/98. I am one month out from surgery, and still experiencing pain from the surgery, although not nearly as much as before. I'm glad to have found your site, as I now realize my condition is normal, and even a little better than most. My husband had a THR 1/28/96 as a result of an auto accident 40 years earlier. He says "40 years of pain -- gone!" My hip just wore out. After the surgery it was determined that my left leg was 1/2 inch longer than my right (it was a left hip replacement). Analyzing the way I walked and wore over my shoes all my life leads me to believe this has always been the case, which caused extra wear on that joint. I wish my 83-year-old uncle could read this page. I understand he needs a replacement, too, but s afraid of the surgery.

I am beginning to notice increased discomfort resulting not from the loosening of the prosthesis but microscopic wear in the synthetic socket. Is anyone else experiencing this symptom. I work out on a treadmill 3X per week.

Until August 1995 I had never been sick in my life. I was diagnosed with a colon tumour which was successfully removed. All subsequent tests were negative but I was advised to undergo chemotherapy in order to prevent re-occurence or secondaries. I had hemo for 9 months and on completion went into kidney failure with a condition known as nephrotic syndrome. The treatment for this was (yes you've guessed it) large doses of prednisolone (75 mg/day) for over 12 months. The kidneys stabilized and I was withdrawn from the steroid. Almost immediately I started to get pain in the hips which over a period of three months completely immobilized me. AVN was finally confirmed by MRI on 6 January 1998. I underwent THR on the left hip on 14 February 1998 so today (4 March 1998)is day 18 post op. I hadn't seen your site before surgery so I didn't know what to expect. I have an uncemented prosthesis and at the moment have no pain at all in the joint and the operation site is feeling better every day. With the ai of elbow crutches I am walking a total of 1.5 kms a day. I expect to have the right hip replaced in August(if it lasts that long). I feel very positive about the outcome so far. I think that this site is terrific and I would be willing to share my exp riences with anyone who feels the need, especially if there are any Aussies out there.

I was prescribed prednisone in 1995 for an asthmatic condition. I was told by my doctor that it would improve my breathing by 40%, and that my running would improve dramatically. Instead, I developed avascular necrosis. I consulted with a doctor at Mass General, who looked at my films and suggested core decompression. It worked on my right hip, but I had the left hip replaced last July. I was never warned about the dangers of prednisone. IN researching my condition, I discovered that many asthmatics develop AVN after prednisone, especially in my age group. Has anyone ever tried to sue the drug companies?

I signed your guest book several day's ago and decided to write. When I was about eight year's old I developed Perthes disease in both hip's, which left them egg shaped. About 1980 I developed rheumatoid arthritis in both hip's, I lived on Motrin until l 1983 when I had my L/hip done (cemented). Recovery was good, I traded my crutches for a cane, which I soon hung up on the garage wall. I felt pretty well until 1990 when my R/hip went, this was the non cemented type. recovery went well and I was soon back at work climbing in and on airplane's. I was pain free but tired quickly. About a year ago both hip's started hurting most of the time, walking, standing, sitting. I look forward to bed at night. My x-ray's show no sign of loosening, the DR at Kaiser say's live with it, take a stronger pain killer or have them redone, so will live with it. I still mow the lawn and work off a ladder painting, you just have to plan ahead. Hope to hear from someone. Phil Sunset

I had my first visit to orthopedic surgeon on 2/27/98. He indicated that I would be an excellent candidate for THR. Since I recently had a hysterectomy (2/3/98) and am still recovering, and because the hip pain is bearable, I told him that I would wait bit. I want to learn as much as possible before I decide on surgery. This web site is wonderful for that purpose! Since I am just learning about THR, can someone tell me the difference between a cemented and uncemented procedure? (I didn't know enough about this to ask the doctor!) What about ceramic joints? Are there any negative side affects to glucosamine? Any positive ones? Thanks!

Great new site. My painful hips began as a child. I was 27 when I asked my Dr. what was wrong with my right hip. Went to ortho, he wanted me to wait as long as possible. We wanted to have children, Dr. said hurry up. Had first THR 3/95 and 2nd on 11/9 . Had two kids before THR. Wasn't a bed of roses. Childbirth before THR either. I was totally knocked out the first THR but opted for the epidural the 2nd THR I really liked it much better. Still in hosp. 7 days. I stayed totally awake and spent mo t of my time telling jokes. After the Dr. finished sawing through my bone I said "Hey Doc is it to late to change my mind" The whole OR lost it. Then they sedated me just a bit more. I wonder why? Turned out my lower back wasn't getting any stronger w ile waiting for hips to be replaced. I have had alot of lower back problems and muscle leg cramps due to leg length difference post op. I wear a shoe lift, which helps. PT in the beginning only made things hurt more. PT currently is doing some to rel eve sciatic pain. Which gives me great pain into calf muscle. Interestingly enough the exercises I do to stretch the gluteus muscle are not to be done for hip replacements. So I am very gentle and have my fingers crossed along with my right leg. On the mental health note, boy has this site helped. Many a night I have taken pain meds and then sat at this machine and waited to feel better. I have been down the road of feeling hopeless and back again. Feel free to share the good , the bad, and the ugly. THR's have the corner on ugly scars. Right?

I have bilateral AVN of the hips. I am currently awaiting surgery to be performed in April. Because of my age and the life span of THRs, I am going to have a vascularized fibular bone graft in attempt to save my origianl hips as long as possible. What s life span of THR? I would appreciate anyone responding with comments regarding THR vs. vascularized fibular bone graft. I believe that the bone graft is my best chance at saving my hips. The recovery is similar to THR. Both hips will take approximately one year total to recover. I have not had THR yet but this site has been great source of information and inspiration. I would love any response from anyone regarding the above or anything else. I also suffer from cluster headaches which is the most severe pain known to man. I was given prednisone as treatment and after nine days the damage was done to my hips. I am currently in stage III AVN. I found out today from Physicians at Duke the severity of my AVN and will be working on the details of the upcoming surgery in the days to come. Thank you Linda for your work here. Thank you also for people who write in and provide encouragement. Any response would be great.

Comments:
Diagnosed in August 1997 with AVN, I wasted no time and scheduled my first THR for September 3, 1997. The result has been terrific. I have no more pain, am walking smoothly, and am able to function normally without difficulty. My next THR will be scheduled for sometime this year. I'm not looking forward to that, but at least now I know the drill. The surgery isn't nearly as bad as the anticipation. To all hippies...hang in there. There is relief, and your turn at a pain-free existence is just around the bend.
