I found this site from the alt.support.arthritis newsgroup. My problems with my hip started 20 years ago, when I developed persistent, chronic, unresolved hip bursitis on both sides. Last year I had an MRI for sharp groin pain. Sho' nuff... I have a to n acetabular labrum, OA and worn femoral head. Tho' I'm no where needing a new hip at this point, it feels like my course for the future may be slowly playing out in this regard. It's a somewhat frustrating learning experience.

Upon conclusion of long distance training for a half marathon(8wks.),which I ran but was unable to complete due to extreme pain in the right hip/ groin area. After a couple of weeks rest I felt better however began experiencing pain in the left hip. I continued to get around but was finding it more difficult day to day. Approximately 4wks. after I attempted to run my half marathon, I foolishy took my motorcycle out for a ride and upon stopping in at a gas station, fell over on my left side and broke my left hip. I sustained a fracture of left femoral head and received a DHS pinning. At this time, I am awaiting a MRI to determine whether or not AVN has set in. I hope not! I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a similar story. Thanks.

I just spent a day at the hospital for my pre-operation session. My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. After todays session, I am a little "scared' of the proceedure. I'm not afaird of pain as I have lived with this painful hip for the last 10 years. My biggest concern is the fact that everything I do seems to need bending. I do floors bending, gardening bending down, putting on my shoes, pulling up my slacks etc. My natural instinct is to bend down to do almost everything, and of course crossing my legs. I'm concerned that these habits may delay the proper healing of my hip. I however am looking forward to being able to walk a block without pain, to golf without pain, to continue the next number of years without pain.

My story starts at age 11 as a normal active child who had a growth spurt. I developed a SCFE on my right hip and had it pinned. Scar tissue developed and complications from surgery left me in a body cast with a broken femur, then a cup arthroplasty, then a total hip at age 16. (No, I didn't sue). I got 12 years off that hip and had a revision of it in 97. I have a 2 year old daughter to keep up with and am doing ok. I had years of uneven leg length and am now a little closer to normal. No lift is ne ded in my shoes but my back is killing me. Anyone out there with this same problem? Please write, would love to know what helps.

I just want to thank you for having a place for people to turn to!! I was 6 when I had my first hip operation ("the Shelf". It was done by Dr. Staley. About 15 years ago I need a new hip, but I'm a BIG chicken and put it off. Now I have no choice - m pain is unbearable most of the time and at least once a week the joint freezes up to where I can't do anything, except lie there. At this point I'm what you call a "hippie in waiting".

In June of 98 I fell backwards through an open stairwell on a house we were building. Broke my back, dislocated my hip and broke the femoral head. I had a posterior, cementless partial hip replacement that same day. I spent a week on my back waiting for m back brace. I then went to Good Shepard Hospital for one week for rehab. After 8 weeks, I strapped my nail bag back on and went back to work. I have had very few problems except for the ache and soreness in my thigh. I still work out 3 times a week for m back and hip. My hip still tightens up after sitting for more than 15 minutes and needs to be stretched before walking. After stretching, I walk almost normal. Up to that point in my life, I had never had a stitch! I was very glad to find this site. Many of the questions I didn't have answered by my doctor were answered here. I had no idea there were that many people with hip replacements and willing to share there experiences. Thank you.

For over two years I have had what I thought was hamstring/pelvic/inner thigh muscle problems. After intensive massage/chiropractic I am starting to believe that something is wrong with my hip joint. It always seems to be in dull pain, right leg only and when I sit for long car rides my lower buttocks kills. I have not seen a doctor. I used to be a Triatlete and now all I can do is swim. Any help out there?

I hit my hip with a 5 gal bucket about 14 years ago. I chipped the bone and the chip went between the ball and the socket,it made the ball smaller and the socket larger until one day it popped out of the socket and pushed up by my pelvic bone and started o make a groove in it like a socket. It was very painful to try to walk. I finally found a doctor that would do a hip replacement, most of them told me that I was to young and that I was to active. I couldn't stand the pain anymore so I had it done. I had a limp, but it was better than what I had. After 12 years I had to have my second hip replacement. I feel in the yard and broke the socket loose from my old one. I had the surgery about 8 months ago. The Dr. had to put a lot of bone graphs in too get it to hold and put 3 screws in the socket to keep it in place. I have to be real careful with this one. I sure don't want to go thru it again..

A support group however large or small is of tremendous help to a prospective thr candidate! I had my total one year ago tomorrow!! The reason for my surgery is from a winter sports injury I received when I was about 14 yrs. old. I and several other kids were tobaggoning down a steep, heavily snow-covered hill in a pasture. Unfortunately, I was in the first seat. Fortunately, I was the only one hurt............we hit a FROZEN COW PIE!!!!!!! buried deep under the snow. It broke the toboggan to smitherines, threw me out, and left me with a football sized bruise across my right hip. Needless to say, I had to be carried home. About 4 years ago, I started having trouble walking after sitting in a car for long periods of time. It would eventually "work itself out" after I got up and started walking. I was told that it was my hip flexor muscle. Nothing I did improved the condition...it only worsened. In June of 1997, while on a trip to CA to visit family, it became difficult to do much walking of a y kind without a significant limp. I had suspicions that perhaps I had a problem that was more serious, but hoped that it was instead a knee problem that could be helped by surgery. When I got back, I made an appointment with an orthopedic specialist, w o upon hearing my symptoms ordered hip x-rays. Much to my shock, they showed that I had virtually no cartilage between the bones in my hip! From that point, over the next several months, three surgeons told me that I must wait as long as possible, as I was too young to undergo a surgery of this type until all other avenues had been exhausted. Severe arthritis set in quickly, and by Christmas I could barely walk, never slept, etc. A cortisone shot into the joint gave relief for about three days. I had been told that if relief lasted for less than 6-12 months, that surgery was the only solution. By this time, I didn't care what they did to me, as long as in the end I was better! I have had two severe dislocations (one two weeks after the surgery, and one a week ago yesterday), but I thank God that I found a wonderful surgeon who gave me back my life! It's not an easy thing for anyone to go through, but the relief it brings is wo th it in the end. Don't give up! New developments in technology occur every year. Also, remember, you won' necessarily find the "right" doctor for you on the first try. Get several opinions...it's your quality of life, and the only body you'll ever ha e!!!

I took prednisone for 15 years for Crohns Disease. I was diagnosed with AVN of the left hip 2/96 and had a core decompression 3/96. The following year I started with the same pain on the right and ended up having a right core decompression 5/97. The pain started again on the left 1/99. I had a second core decompression on the left 2/8/99. Can't tell much yet as I am on crutches and still having surgical pain. To complicate matters further I also have fibromyalgia. No THR for me yet but I know eventually I will need two of them. Question--does anyone know if it is possible to carry a baby after core decompressions. After I heal, my husband and I would like to start a family. This web site is great! E-mail me.
