I suffered for about 8 years with my hip discomfort. I finally could not take the pain any longer so I "succumbed" to having hip replacement surgery. I had my right hip replaced on January 6, 1996 and my left replaced on March 3, 1996. I am glad I did. I have not felt better (at least for a few years). I was able to go back to work after 6 weeks after each of the surgeries. But this took a lot of hard work and physical therapy. My new hip joints were not cemented. They were the type that allows the bone to grow to the prothesis. I hope to minimize my next replacement, but time will tell. All is well now. I haven't even dislocated it yet. I do a lot of exercise and am very careful about the ways I move, stoop and pick things up. This is the key, in my opinion, awareness of what can happen if the move is wrong. The only limitation I have is the high impact sports of course. These are no-nos. I do play golf however, and one thing for sure, my shots are straighter than before-just not quite as far.

i WAS DIAGNOSED WITH sle lupus IN 1984, treated with over 100mg of steroids to control for several years. This led to Avascular necrosis. In 87 the pain started, since i was only 37 the Drs. said i was too young for a thp. Finally in 96 they did it because the pain and gimp was real bad. They replaced my R Hip. 1st day after operation, i was sitting in a chair eating supper and it rolled out. After putting it back it lasted another day and it came out again. Back to Surgery for 2nd time. After 3 weeks in Hospital i was sent home, with hip brace to wear. It came out even with this on. It came out getting into a full size car, going up a stair. Laying in bed. Finally after sending me to Syracuse Medical Center They put me under the Knife in March of 98. They did something called a Bi-polateral I think. Its stayed in,now i suffer from bursitis and sometimes after driving or sitting to long i have trouble walking and pain. The Ortho says because the Lupus and Steriods ruined my Muscles,i will have trouble for the r st of my life. I try to lead a normal life but it still bothers me. I do walk, ride my Mt. Bike and moderate exercise. So that's what's happened to me. I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem?

Do not rely on surveys relating to national rankings of Hospitals, such as US News& World Report Mag. to determine who is going to do your next hip replacement, I picked their # One Hospital in orthopedics, and it was a disaster, if you want the story E-Ma l me.

I have a congenital dislocation of my left hip. This was not really noticed when I began to walk, but through a combination of circumstances nothing was done about it even after a formal diagnosis when i was 7. As a result I walk with the classic CDH gait of a splayed leg and a very heavy limp. I have tried using a stick and a crutch but find that neither is very helpful, so in general I just get on with it. I'd be interested to chat to others with an unreduced CDH. Why not e-mail me?

I am 47 yrs.old and I've had 3 hip replacements on my right hip. I've also recently had both knees replaced. After my first hip replacement 23 yrs. ago I had twins. Yes, I had a C-section. So my husband and I have raised 4 kids. I have always work d full time, as a teacher's aide at a local elementary school. I have never had to use a wheel chair or a lot of extra gadgets, I've found that if I wanted something bad enough, I could figure out a way to do it. When my husband built the house we live in now, he put in a handicap commode and hand rails in the bathroom. I still can take hot bubble baths or stand in the shower. I can even work in my garden in the spring and push mow the grass in the summer. But I'm lucky to have the job that I ha e because I have 10 weeks off in the Summer, Spring and Christmas breaks to rest and relax. My last hip revision my fermur bone broke and the Dr. placed 3 steel bands and also rebuilt bone with donor bone grafts. It took 6 months for it to heal. I'll be glad to talk with anyone about any part of the total - hip patient's life!

I have not gotten a THR yet, but my doctor has recommended that I do. I've been taking Prednisone for approximately 4 years and this has caused Avascular Necrosis. I'm just a bit anxious about the time I will have to be off my feet and will I be able to ake care of myself after the surgery.

I had a THR(right hip) on October 13, 1998 at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Paul Pellicci performed the surgery and did a wonderful job. I feel geat and I'm well on the road to a good recovery. I'm glad I had the surgery and will probably need the other hip done in 3 or 4 years.Prior to my surgery, I was walking with a cane and always had pain in the right hip. It was an ordeal to walk or sit in a chair. I feel great now and regret I waited so long to have it done.

Had a head on collision while 5 mo. pregnant with my son. Shattered my hip. Dr. tied to reconstructi it. That lasted for 6 mo. and then had to have a THR. My son was born perfectly, however somehow snagged some pins coming through the birth canal and n w bears some scars on his back as well. My new hip is great, just hope it lasts as long as possible. I'm a single mother and own my own business and can't imagine having to go through this again anytime soon.

I guess you can call me a "newbee". I was just diagnosed with osteonecrosis. I couldn't find anything on this disease at the library. My physician informed me that this disease was "rare". But by what I'm reading on your web page, it doesn't seem so. Yo web page has given me a more positive outlook of what's to come... Keep up the great work!

Loved your site! It is so upbeat. The music is great! I've just recently gotten this computer and stumbled onto your site via the forum. I am enjoying having someone to talk to that has "been there" and can relate and give advice. I am so tired of talking to just doctors. Although I haven't had any "hip" surgeries, I hope my writing isn't an intrusion. My hips are fine, it's my guts that keep popping open! Thanks, Jackie
