Surgery done Nov. 3rd., 1998. I still use a cane and receive physical therapy. I am presently experiencing a lot of skin sensitivity at back of right thigh, driving me to see a neurologist. He has scheduled EMG's on both legs. Anyone else experience this? Also. I still am not driving.

Left hip replaced Dec 1,1999. Pain was mild and recovery has been faster and easier than expected. Biggest fear is accidental displacement. Concerned about starting back horse back riding. Would like input from fellow equestrian riders who have had experience good or bad.

Linda, I am so pleased to find your website...I am scheduled to have total hip replacement on both hips, the right one first, then the second....then back surgery. I am so nervous about this, as I have cancelled my surgery twice...but the pain is unbearable now, and I have no choice but to go forward.. Your website has given me so much information. I checked out what the scar would look like, I discovered some scars are longer and more pronounced than others. I noticed that Lisa C's scar seemed t be shorter. I would like to e-mail her and see who her doctor was. And learn a little as to what her circumstances were to cause the surgery. Could you put me in touch with her? Again thank you for the wonderful website! Patsy

I am married with three children ages 12, 5, and 4. My first surgery at age 11 was a hip pinning that was unsuccessful due to necrosis. Bone graft after that which was unsuccessful. A couple more surgeries then my first THR at age 13. Many problems because of my young age and still growing and not much experience at that time with THR.

I'm just joining your group after reading all the information yesterday. This THR is scary to me because I had a TKR two years ago, so those of you that have had that done know why I am rather apprehensive about THR. If the hip is anything like a knee I'll just suffer and take pain med. Would like to hear from someone.

Congenital dislocated hips, not discovered until I tried to walk. Had closed inductions, my mom was afraid of surgery. First walked with braces at 3. Everything fine until I was pregnant. 1988 had a shelf procedure on the left hip. Walking on the right one sent it over the edge and had a shelf on that one. The first one wasn't as good, because that was the hip that was done last when I was a baby. was playing with my kids and felt the shelf break. Then I had a total on that hip. Cementless and it has been fine. The doctor I had didn't think I needed much PT,even though I'd had 3 surgeries in 3 years, so it took 2 more years to recover. Finally found someone who taught me to walk properly. Now I bicycle and backpack. Life is good!

I had my right THR March of 1993. I have been lucky on my THR. I just watch what I do and how I do it. I need to have the left one done soon. The Orto. Doctor has left the time to have it done up to me. I am trying to hold off until about March. I have Steroid induced AVN and Osteoporosis from long time use of prednisone for my COPD condition.

I had hip replacement surgery last June. I had broken my hip 3 1/2 years before but the damaged blood supply caused the bone to die. I have had a great deal of difficulty walking unassisted since my surgery. I am still using a cane. I have just undergone 4 more weeks of PT and am going 3 to 4 times a week to the YMCA for water exercise. I am somewhat discouraged by my slow recovery. My doctor seems perplexed as well. I must add though that I am a third grade public school teacher and am on my feet a l day. Does anyone have any suggestions???????

Wish I would have found your sight before I had surgery. All-in-all, it was a positive experience, although I was taken to the hospital on the 6th day after surgery. They suspected a blood clot and did tests. No blood clot but the x-ray tech really caused problems as she tore my groin muscle by positioning my leg in a most awkward and painful position. (Not necessary at all!) The orthopedic nurses told me how to microwave a wet hand towel and put it a plastic bag and then a pillow-case. That was on y groin constantly for 2 1/2 wks. Again, thank you for a useful sight! Seattle Sue

Fractured right hip while cross country skiing on Christmas Eve 95. Got 10K miles of bicycling before ball flattened from lack of blood flow. Got replacement (pressed in) 10 wks. ago. Felt better immediatly; walking now w/o cane. Plan to test it on the b ke in the spring.

My sister, Sue Lamb (email: garnet64@hotmail.com) is 34 years old ( 35 on Jan 11 ) is facing bilateral hip replacements in the very near future. In fact, Jan 12 she goes in for final eval and to potentially sched the surgery date. She emailed me to conn ct me to your site so that we can both do research. Unfortunately, I am here in San Francisco and she is in Maine. Her treatment is to be done in Boston. If you have any advice: mental, physical, things to look for, general insite would be great! I w ll explore your site now further. Thank you for creating an important place of information. Kellie

The basic surgery went well, but I am still having difficulty lifting my leg because of pain in the groin and front pelvic area. I have had this pain for years, but I was hoping the surgery would resolve this pain if I could use my hip properly. The surge n tells me it may be "soft tissue damage" so I am off to see another "specialist". Is there anyone who may have had similar problem that may help find a solution?

 Yours Truly, Karen E

I am having further problems I thought would be resolved with my surgery. I am still having pain lifting and moving my leg. I am able to sleep most nights in reasonable comfort. I am looking for answers as to what soft tissue damage may have occurred in t e groin and front pelvic area over the past 20 odd years.

thank you. Yours truly, Karen Engemoen
